NEW SHIPWRECKS EXHIBIT UNVEILED AT DOOR COUNTY MARITIME MUSEUM

Take a journey through the new immersive exhibit at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay. Start your journey on land, aboard the freighter Elba, experience the ship sinking to the bottom of Lake Michigan and explore the lake floor for shipwrecks. The new “Shipwrecks of Door County” exhibit takes you through the history of scuba diving to plunging beneath the surface of Door County’s waters to exploring the history of the shipwrecks surrounding us. Learn about the watery graves of some of the over 200 historic losses that now call Door County waters their permanent home.

On Saturday, May 26, “Shipwrecks of Door County” opens to the public with an exciting day-long Grand Opening event sponsored by Lakeshore Adventures LLC. Join us for engaging activities; learn about shipwrecks from maritime speakers, follow along on guided curator tours and hear about historic shipwrecks from a lighthouse keeper’s perspective. Bring the little ones along for educational and entertaining children’s activities to include a shipwreck scavenger hunt, paper boat building, and don’t forget to pose with the nautical props at the selfie station.

With the purchase of standard admission, visitors can discover the new exhibit, explore the three other galleries highlighting Door County’s maritime history and enjoy the opening celebration events.

This new exhibit delivers a fascinating look into Door County’s historical shipwreck tragedies. Use a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) simulator to locate and explore a shipwreck, explore a sunken vessel, discover artifacts among the shipwreck debris field, learn about the preservation of Door County shipwrecks and watch footage of underwater discoveries in the exhibit theater.
